Musculoskeletal Dry Needling BRISBANE
Got Muscle Pain? Discover Dry Needling with a Trusted Physiotherapist!
Dry needling therapy is an effective modality used to treated myofascial trigger points throughout muscles (or in simpler terms, a technique used to stimulate blood flow and enhance your body’s natural healing response).
It works by inserting a sterile, thin needle into the affected tissue. The hypersensitive area of the muscle tissue will elicit a “twitch response” and the muscle relaxes and resets the involved area. The needle may then be left in for a longer period of time to stimulate blood flow to the area and enhance the bodies natural healing response.

What are the benefits of Dry Needling?
-
Increase range of motion.
Joints can have their range of movement limited by tight restrictive muscles which causing pressure on them. Dry needling, a physiotherapy technique, relaxes these tissues, letting joints move freely. By doing this the body is in an optimal range again which will help you perform more efficiently and safely.
-
Increase your strength.
When a tissue is hypertonic, tight and contracted, it is unable to perform its role to 100% function. By relieving the myofascial trigger point stress on a tight muscle it will have greater ability to contract without putting pressure on the tendons and hence give you more control and power when training or performing day to day activities.
-
Speed up recovery.
Trigger points develop in a muscle from lack of blood supply and oxygen given to the soft tissues when it has been overcontracted. This can be in sustained poor postures or from overuse in exercises. Dry needling increases blood supply to the tissues, quickly relaxing muscle tension and having you feel back to normal fast.
-
Prevent injury.
Through training or postural demands, the body can develop tightness and trigger points which limit movement and performance, leading to compensations which create excessive demands at certain tissues. This is a huge contributor to injuries. Dry needling technique can break this cycle and restore optimal body function.

How It Works
Dry needling involves inserting thin, sterile needles into tight or dysfunctional muscles to stimulate healing and restore function. The needle triggers a response that releases muscle tension, improves blood flow, and reduces pain sensitivity.
This technique works by targeting myofascial trigger points—areas of muscle tightness that can cause pain and restrict movement. By stimulating these points, dry needling helps reset muscle activity, allowing muscles to relax and function properly again.

Musculoskeletal Dry Needling FAQ
-
Dry needling is based on musculoskeletal science and targets muscle trigger points, while acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy flow (Qi).
-
Most people feel minimal discomfort, though a twitch response or mild soreness may occur as the muscle releases tension.
-
The number of sessions depends on the severity of your condition. Some people feel relief after one session, while others may need multiple treatments.
-
Yes, when performed by a trained professional, dry needling is a safe and effective technique for relieving muscle pain and improving movement.
-
Some mild soreness is normal after a session, similar to post-exercise muscle fatigue, and usually resolves within a day or two.
-
Yes, it is often used alongside physiotherapy, massage, and corrective exercises to enhance recovery and long-term results.
-
Yes, by improving joint alignment and reducing muscle imbalances, it can support better posture and reduce strain on the spine.
-
Joint manipulation involves a quick, controlled movement, while mobilisation uses slower, more gradual techniques to improve movement in stiff joints.
