Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)
Designed to clinically assess 7 fundamental movement patterns.
SFMA is a movement based diagnostic system, designed to clinically assess 7 fundamental movement patterns. This model efficiently integrates the concepts of altered motor control, the neurodevelopmental perspective, and regional interdependence into musculoskeletal practice.

How does it work?
SFMA is incorporated into screening for those with known musculoskeletal pain. The assessment provides an efficient method to systematically find the cause of symptoms. By logically breaking down the dysfunctional pattern and diagnosing their root cause we are able to identify the most effective and holistic treatment plan.
Through SFMA we are able to differentiate if the problem is a mobility, stability or motor control issues. This systematic process allows clinicians to clearly match their intervention to the main problem of the patient.
SFMA FAQ
-
While FMS is a general screening tool for identifying movement limitations, SFMA is designed for individuals experiencing pain, helping pinpoint the underlying dysfunction.
-
No, SFMA benefits anyone dealing with pain, movement restrictions, or recurring injuries, whether they are athletes, fitness enthusiasts, or individuals recovering from injury.
-
SFMA is an assessment tool, but findings from the screening are used to develop targeted rehabilitation, corrective exercises, or performance programs.
-
A typical SFMA session lasts 30–45 minutes, depending on the complexity of movement restrictions and required testing.
-
Yes, by correcting movement dysfunctions, SFMA helps athletes move more efficiently, reducing injury risk and enhancing performance.
